Dice poker brings together the comfort of poker rankings and the randomness of dice into a fun and challenging game that can be played almost anywhere (not just casinos!)
At the start of each turn, a single player throws all five dice and looks at their hand to decide which dice to discard and which to put on another.
Rules
Dice poker is a fun strategy and intelligence game for playing with friends. Additionally, its strategic challenges are great for practicing other gaming frameworks and play styles.
Every player rolls all five dice at the beginning of his turn. After finishing, he or she can then decide between keeping and re-rolling dice to raise his or her hand, or getting the highest ranked poker hand to win that round.
So, before you start using this form of dice-rolling, learn the basic rules, scoring structure and hand rankings/slot intervals first.
Variations
Poker dice is poker without a stake, you get five dedicated dice that have Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten in them. With more player vs player and scoring chances you can also throw in another Royal die for even more scoring opportunities in this fun dice game!
The best poker hand, where one value and a number appear consecutively on each of the five dice, is a straight. Full house is next; 3 pair and two pairs are also near bottom. Rules vary slightly from game to game, but generally work the same way: once a turn, you can reroll any dice you like to build up your hand and strengthen it.
Betting intervals
You can play dice poker by yourself or with a group of two, and you need nothing other than standard dice and a flat table to roll them on. This makes the game very easy to enjoy in all kinds of contexts and places.
You have to be careful about which dice you keep and which ones you roll, because it really does impact the kinds of hands you can form. Choosing dice with low probabilities of revealing specific numbers, for example, increases one’s chance of forming top hands, increasing one’s chances of success and winning by a large amount. This is the type of skills one should master if one wishes to become a winning dice player and have a better chance of winning in general.
Hand rankings
Dice poker is a fun mix of skill and chance, mixing the strategic complexity of poker with the randomness of dice. It’s an ideal card game for social and solo players, which can be played both in your home and out in busy casino games halls.
On the first turn of the game, all five dice are rolled. After this first move, they have to assess what their potential hand could be and either keep or roll again to try to increase it – whoever has the best hand wins!
Two aces make this the most profitable hand to play, followed by full houses and straights (some versions don’t even have straight options). As a general rule, players should roll the most they can, saving all the dice that have a higher rank on them and re-rolling those that have no higher rank.
Bluffing
Clear bluffing is never acceptable when playing dice poker as this will make your opponents suspicious of what you are doing. Rather, you should make use of social dynamics and follow other players’ responses because that will give you hints as to whether or not someone is going to bluff so that you can modify your play accordingly.
The objective of the game: Make the hand that is highest among all players during one round. Every player gets up to three dice, and picking the dice to hold on and roll again can either boost or destroy your hand – you have to balance risk with reward as having to reroll dice can make you more likely to get a high ranking hand, which is exciting and interesting!
